Albanian police have seized 41.35 kilograms of suspected cocaine from a container carrying chicken meat from Brazil at the Port of Durrës.

Authorities found 37 packages of the suspected drug concealed in the container’s external panels. The cocaine is estimated to have a street value of around €2 million.

The shipment had been ordered by Albanian company AMG Food. Investigators are now working to determine the origin and intended destination of the cocaine and whether the company or individuals connected to it were involved in the trafficking. The company’s owners have not been questioned so far.

According to police sources, investigators suspect the cocaine may have originated in Brazil and been transported through Greece before reaching Albania.

The seizure marks the third suspected attempt within a month to smuggle narcotics into Albania through the Port of Durrës.

The investigation comes amid scrutiny of the shipment’s importer. In 2025, AMG Food imported eight tons of chicken fillets from Brazil that were later found to be contaminated with salmonella. The company’s owner was investigated while remaining at liberty.

Imports of meat from Brazil were suspended in Albania and EU countries from September 3, although shipments covered by contracts signed before the ban are exempt.
