Albania: Ivanka Trump Buys Sazan Island for $1 Billion, but the Area Is Riddled with Unexploded Mines
According to The Guardian, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner , the daughter and son-in-law of US President Donald Trump , have spent over a billion dollars to purchase Sazan, a pristine Albanian island. The real challenge will be clearing the land of unexploded mines.
The history of this island - The island, a former military base, is a protected area and part of the Karaburun-Sazan National Marine Park. Since 2015, it has been open to visitors, while still retaining a portion as a military zone. Previously, it was an isolated area used for training and military operations , and during the communist regime it was a full-fledged military base, with remnants of bunkers and tunnels . The couple had long had their eye on Sazan, but the negotiations, with the Affinity company , took place without the knowledge of residents and parliamentarians. At least until the €1.4 billion agreement was reached and the news was released. The real challenge will be clearing the area of unexploded mines. The Affinity group is also reportedly eyeing Serbia , with the transformation of the former Ministry of Defense headquarters in Belgrade into a luxury hotel.
The project - The idea is to transform the land into a luxury resort , and although Albanians have already dubbed it " Trump Island ," criticism has quickly come from environmental groups and members of the scientific community, concerned about the project's consequences. In a podcast, President Trump had positively commented on the initiative: "It will be extraordinary." The real challenge will be to clean up the area and make it safe for future visitors.
