Albania Opposition Disrupts Parliament Days Before Planned Protest

Albania’s Democratic Party (DP) caused disruptions in parliament on Thursday, just days ahead of a protest scheduled for 22 December.

Opposition MPs occupied the seats of government ministers before the session had officially begun, leading to clashes with parliamentary guards. Flares and smoke devices were set off inside the chamber, heightening tensions.

The Democratic Party accused the ruling majority of political pressure following a request by the Special Prosecution against Corruption (SPAK) to seek parliamentary approval for the arrest of Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku. During the session, DP MPs refused to return to their seats, while party leader Sali Berisha blocked the speaker’s podium and declined to step aside.

Physical confrontations were reported between opposition MPs and security personnel, as lawmakers demanded that guards leave the chamber. Flares were lit and water and papers were thrown in the direction of Defence Minister Niko Peleshi and the guards.

Amid the disorder, Peleshi moved proceedings directly to a vote. Despite the chaos, parliament approved the day’s agenda and passed several pieces of legislation.
