Albanian Investments abroad Growing
Albanian investments abroad this year are growing for the fifth consecutive year, even faster than foreign investments in Albania.
According to data from the Bank of Albania, for the first 6 months of 2025, the value of investments by Albanian companies abroad reached Euro 160 million, 12.7% more compared to the same period a year earlier. This is the highest historical level of Albanian investments abroad.
For the most part, Albanian investments are direct contributions to the capital of companies controlled abroad. These capital injections accounted for more than 60% of the new flow of Albanian investments abroad for the first half of this year. The rest consists of reinvested profits of Albanian companies in their subsidiaries located abroad or loans from Albanian shareholders to them.
The net balance of foreign direct investments for the first 6 months of 2025 was negative, for a total value of Euro 599 million. The negative balance in the foreign investment account means that foreign direct investment inflows into Albania remain much higher compared to Albanian investments abroad. However, this negative balance has narrowed slightly by 1.8% compared to the same period a year ago. This has happened because, for this year, Albanian investments abroad have increased more than foreign direct investments in Albania.
Statistical data on Albanian business investments abroad are not detailed in terms of their geographical or sectoral distribution.
Until a few years ago, investments went mainly to neighboring markets; there are now Albanian groups that are investing significant amounts in the markets of Western Europe and the USA.
The Balfin Group has been investing in the construction and real estate sectors in Austria for years. According to the group's own data, until May of this year, the investment portfolio in Austria was estimated at around Euro 100 million, while it aims to further increase it to Euro 200 million, mainly in the real estate sector.
Since 2022, the Balfin Group has also started operating in Switzerland, and is now also present in the American market, with the main focus always on the development or acquisition of real estate in the USA and Canada, following the model it has also followed in Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia.
The Kastrati group has also expanded its investments in the American market, with the purchase of DUA Hotel Miami.
Data from the Central Bank of Kosovo (CBK) provides information on Albanian investments in Kosovo, which is estimated to be the country with the largest concentration of our investments abroad.
CBK figures show that by the end of March 2025, the stock of Albanian investments in Kosovo was worth Euro 490 million. With this figure, Albania is the fifth largest investor in Kosovo.
