A bomb threat reported at a school in central Tirana on Monday, the first day of the new academic year in Albania, triggered an immediate response from state police and the country’s Counter-Terrorism Directorate.

The alert was reported at “Emin Duraku” school, where authorities carried out a full inspection of the building as a precaution, amid the return of thousands of students to classrooms across the country.

Police officers found no suspicious object or device inside the school. Preliminary investigations determined that the threat was a false alarm, according to authorities.

Following the report, investigators began working to identify the person who had contacted the State Police operations center and reported the alleged bomb. Police subsequently identified and detained Mand Jatagani, who is suspected of making the false bomb threat.

According to preliminary findings, Jatagani allegedly called the police operations center on the morning of September 14 and claimed that a bomb had been placed inside the “Emin Duraku” school in the former Blloku area of Tirana.

Authorities have also identified Jatagani as a person who has previously participated in protests in the capital. Counter-Terrorism officers are investigating whether the latest incident is connected to his previous public activities and alleged calls for acts of violence.

The motive behind Monday’s bomb threat remains unclear.

The incident occurred as more than 340,000 students across Albania began the 2026-2027 school year, including approximately 25,000 children attending school for the first time.

No explosive device was found at the school, and authorities have launched further proceedings to establish the full circumstances surrounding the false alarm.
