Budget Surplus Widens 18% in Jan-Apr
Albania's consolidated budget was in surplus of Lek 54.1 billion (Dollar 659.6 million/Euro 566.2 million) in the first four months of the year, higher than the Lek 45.84 billion surplus recorded in the same period of last year, Finance Minister Petrit Malaj said in a statement on Monday.
Consolidated budget revenue rose by an annual 11.7% to Lek 275.7 billion in the four months through April, as expenditures increased by 6.2% to Lek 221.6 billion, the minister said, citing finance ministry data on preliminary figures.
Tax and customs revenues increased 4.7% on the year, amounting to Lek 171.6 billion.
Revenues from VAT on imports also showed positive growth. For the period January-April 2026, this indicator marked Lek 49.5 billion, Lek 704 million, or 1.4% more than the first four months of 2025, or 96.8% of the plan for the period.
Meanwhile, revenues from excise duties were realized in the amount of Lek 20.4 billion, Lek 437 million, or 2.2% more than the first four months of 2025, or 97.5% of the plan for the first four months of 2026. The Minister noted that this increase comes as a result of improved tax and customs administration, as well as more correct implementation of the medium-term revenue strategy.
Albania's consolidated budget recorded a deficit of Lek 47.1 billion in 2025, after ending 2024 with a deficit of Lek 18.3 billion.
