Becchetti Sentenced to Prison, Court Unveils Details
Italian businessman Francesco Beccheti declared wanted by Albania since 2015 was convicted in the Court of Tirana on charges of fraud and money laundering with 17 years in prison. He was convicted along with his mother Liliana Condimitti, partner Mouro de Renzis, company financier Eriona Troplini and Stavri Peçi and Fetah Dervishi. In total the court sentenced him to 49 years in prison and 5 years probation.
The panel headed by Judge Besnik Hoxha with members Sokol Pasho and Lazër Sallaku also sentenced Beccheti's partners Mouro de Renzis to 16 years in prison, Eriona Troplin to 8 years in prison and his mother Liliana Condimitti to 8 years in prison. Two people accused of forging documents Stavri Peçi, Fetah Dervishi were sentenced to 2 and 3 years in prison, respectively, but the court said that their sentence was converted into a suspended sentence.
The charges against the Italian businessman Francesco Beccheti, who had received a concession right from the Albanian state for the construction of a hydropower plant in Kalivaç in the late 90', became official in 2015. In addition to the charges against him and his associates, the prosecution also seized a number of businesses including Agon Channel television. The issue became part of the country's political debate after the opposition accused the prime minister Edi Rama of shutting down a television station that criticized him. From 2015, Beccheti continued on the run a confrontation with the Albanian state and has won in international arbitration 110 million euros in damages, for breaking contracts and seizing his assets.
Meanwhile, in parallel with this process, the Tirana prosecutor's office continued the criminal proceedings against Becchetti and sent the file against him to the court. According to the enacting clause read by Judge Hoxha, Beccheti and other companies owned by him and his mother and other accused persons created fictitious civil disputes. The company "Energji", owned by Beccheti's mother and mother-in-law, claimed that it had not been paid in full and sent KGE, a company owned by Beccheti, to a private company licensed for mediation and arbitration. At the end of this arbitration trial, the contractor "Energji" won 48.5 million euros from KGE.
But the loser, as it turned out, was in fact Hydro Srl, which owns 48% of its shares in Deutsche Bank and the rest in Beccheti. "From this machination is Deutsche Bank that has lost 45-48 percent of the amount of 48.5 million euros", said the judge.
After reading parts of the indictment, Hoxha said that the court considered "that all the defendants should be found guilty of the charges brought for trial". Beccheti himself was convicted on 4 charges and the court handed down a sentence of 17 years out of 20 that were requested by the prosecution, that in this hearing the decision is represented by three prosecutors, the head of the Tirana Prosecution Elizabeta Imeraj, prosecutor Mirela Zavalani and prosecutor Leonard Filopati.
Becchetti has denied the allegations and claimed he was politically persecuted by Prime Minister Edi Rama and the government. Meanwhile the companies created by Becchetti and included in this scheme were confiscated and closed by court decision.
