Korçë Prosecution Files Four Charges against Man Who Killed Police Officer

Prosecution of Korça have brought four criminal charges against Violand Braçellari and requested that he remain in custody under the security measure of “pre-trial detention in prison,” a request that was accepted by the court.

Braçellari is suspected of killing police officer Enea Mekolli, injuring another officer, and illegally possessing a firearm.

According to investigations, the incident occurred on June 4 in the Bodesë Mountain area during an operation aimed at apprehending Braçellari, who had been wanted by authorities and was serving a 10-year prison sentence for drug trafficking offenses.

Prosecution allege that during the operation, Braçellari opened fire on police forces attempting to arrest him. Officer Enea Mekolli was killed in the exchange, while officer Edison Adri sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

The prosecution stated that Braçellari continued firing despite officers being clearly identifiable in police uniforms and repeatedly ordering him to surrender.

Authorities argue that the suspect poses a high social risk and had evaded justice for several years. Meanwhile, prosecutors have also launched an investigation into potential “Abuse of Office” allegations related to the planning and command of the police operation.

The investigation remains ongoing.
