Democratic Party has filed a legal challenge with the Constitutional Court against the law ratifying a €302 million loan agreement between Albania and the United States for the purchase of military equipment.

Gazment Bardhi, head of the Democratic Party's parliamentary group, said Wednesdat that the opposition does not oppose the agreement itself but argues that the parliamentary procedure used to approve it violated the Constitution.

According to Bardhi, the governing majority denied lawmakers sufficient time and access to review the agreement before it was put to a vote, preventing members of parliament from properly exercising their legislative responsibilities.

The Democratic Party says it has identified seven constitutional violations, including lawmakers' lack of access to the full documentation, failure to respect parliamentary deadlines, the use of an expedited legislative procedure, and limited transparency due to the agreement's classified status.

Bardhi argued that the government had enough time to follow the standard parliamentary process and that there was no justification for fast-tracking the legislation.

"The issue is not the agreement itself, but the unconstitutional manner in which the parliamentary majority chose to approve it," Bardhi said.

The opposition has asked the Constitutional Court to annul the ratification law and suspend its implementation pending judicial review.

The agreement with the United States provides a €302 million loan aimed at modernizing Albania's military capabilities and equipping its Armed Forces. The Democratic Party has reiterated its support for strengthening the country's defense and its strategic partnership with the United States, while insisting that such agreements must be approved in full compliance with the Albanian Constitution.
