DP Blames Govt for Lezha Floods
Democratic Party Member of Parliament Lindita Metaliaj reacted to the flood situation in Lezhë. Metaliaj says that the cause of the floods in the city is the lack of investment by the central government, while adding that the problem of the situation remains in the rural areas as they are in a state of alert.
"The actual situation in the city of Lezha is dramatic. It is among the most dramatic in the last decade. In fact, it is an unprecedented situation, and absolutely the entire city, but also the rural areas are in chaos and on alert.
Currently, as we speak, 25 schools have been evacuated. Teaching has been suspended in 25 schools of Lezha, also in villages. Also, in the city of Lezha, this thing has never happened before, except for the "Besëlidhja" neighbourhood, which was flooded from time to time. You cannot enter or leave the city of Lezha. The first floors of buildings and businesses are completely under the power of water. As you can see, the river Drin has burst its banks.
The situation speaks for itself, I don't have to comment more than that. It is a clear picture. It is a situation that worsens, year after year.
The city of Lezha is flooded, because the high water channel is also the collector of high water from the streams coming from the mountain in the hospital neighbourhood that then overflow into the Martyrs' Cemetery, flowing into the "Besëlidhja" neighbourhood, overflowing at about 11.2 hectares in the neighbourhood of the city. No required investment has been made, there are inert contents that overflow from the mountain, from the hospital district, and there is always chaos there. Even the ambulance can't go down to the hospital.
Another problem is the lack of electricity in the city of Lezha, but also in rural areas. There have been occasional power outages, which has resulted in hydropower not working at full capacity. There have been no investments in hydropower. Whether it's in the Gocaj reservoir, or in Talë, during the day it has been continuously interrupted, because there is a lack of a second source of energy in these reservoirs.
Therefore, there is no investment in the Drin river, in addition to the expansion of the Drin river. There are no investments in hydropower. It is the new Balldren hydropower project, which is still on Prime Minister Rama's desk, and is not being invested.
We still have many problems, lack of investment in the purchase of heavy equipment. Be it in excavators or other equipment.
All this lack of investment and attention for Lezha causes the situation to degrade. It is not the time to do politics, but we cannot be silent about politics, because I am a representative of the citizens and I have to realistically reflect the dramatic situation and the situation that is happening today in the city of Lezha, but not only, in the rural areas as well," she said.
