DP Files Criminal Complaint over Police Violence during Tirana Protest
Democratic Party (PD) has filed a criminal complaint at the Special Prosecution Office (SPAK) over alleged police violence against students, protesters and journalists during a demonstration in Tirana the previous day.
The complaint names Interior Minister Ervin Demo, State Police Director Skënder Hitaj and several other senior officials, according to the party.
Speaking on the matter, Democratic Party parliamentary group leader Gazment Bardhi strongly condemned the police response, describing the alleged actions against young protesters as unacceptable and calling for an investigation into any unlawful conduct.
“No one wearing the uniform of the State Police is above the law,” Bardhi said, arguing that law enforcement officers have a responsibility to protect citizens and uphold their rights.
He stressed that peaceful protest is a fundamental right and said the authorities should respond to young people's demands through dialogue and accountability rather than force or intimidation.
“The voice of students must be heard, not suppressed,” Bardhi said.
The opposition party’s complaint comes amid scrutiny of the police response to the protest. The allegations are to be examined by the competent authorities, which will determine whether any criminal wrongdoing occurred.
