EC Responds to PM Rama's Accusations

The press office of the European Commission in Brussels has rejected the claims of Prime Minister Edi Rama, who declared that EU Commissioner, Mariya Gabriel had intervened to the internal electoral campaign of Albania.

PM Rama reacted harshly on Tuesday, following the presence of Commissioner Gabriel in the presentation of DP for the Education sector in the framework of parliamentary elections of April 25. The Albanian Premier described this as "sticking the nose" into the election campaign of an EU member candidate, adding that he is waiting for a response from the EU.

The response has come from European Commission spokeswoman Ana Pizonero, who stressed that the activity in question was at the regional level and without any impact on the Albanian political situation.

"The commission does not comment on the comments of third parties. Please note that Commissioner Mariya Gabriel participated in the 18th Roundtable on Education, at the invitation of the Modul University of Vienna, which is the organizer of this event. The commissioner's participation was limited to giving a keynote speech," the EC spokeswoman said.

"The speech, which is published on the Commission's website, focuses on the latest European initiatives in the field of education and research, which apply to the entire Western Balkans region, including Albania. The commissioner did not make any statement for any political party, but gave a speech on issues related to her field", it is further said in the reaction.
