EU4Schools, 63 New Schools for 25,000 Students and Teachers
The transformation of schools in areas affected by the 2019 earthquake is entering its final phase, bringing a new reality for thousands of students and teachers in Albania. Thanks to the “EU4Schools” program, 63 educational facilities have been rebuilt or reconstructed, ensuring safer, more modern and dignified conditions for around 25,000 beneficiaries in 11 municipalities.
With funding of 75 million euros from the European Union and implemented by United Nations Development Programme in cooperation with the Albanian government, the program is based on two main pillars: “Rebuilding Better” and “Rebuilding Together.”
UNDP Albania communication expert Nora Kushti emphasized to the media that the program aimed not only at the physical reconstruction of schools, but also at creating a new development model.
“The goal was to build stronger, safer schools according to the best European standards. This includes energy efficiency, the use of solar energy and full access for children with disabilities. In parallel, we have involved the community at every step of the process, making them part of decision-making,” said Kushti.
A new element of this program is transparency, through a platform that provides real-time information on the progress of the works, creating open communication with the public.
Program manager Egla Gollaj estimates that the impact of the investment goes beyond infrastructure.
“This program has directly impacted the quality of education. In addition to new buildings, we have also improved teaching and learning conditions. This is an added value for the education system,” she said.
On the ground, the change is tangible. Schools are equipped with laboratories, sports facilities, modern heating and cooling systems, as well as high safety standards. Accessibility has been another priority, with ramps and elevators installed in almost all buildings.
One of the most prominent investments is the “Benardina Qerraxhia” Sports-Oriented High School, now a modern complex with high-standard sports facilities, including an Olympic-sized gym, unique in the country.
Students and teachers experience this change every day. Emanuel Murati from the “Asim Vokshi” school says that the conditions were decisive in his choice.
“From the very first moment I saw the school, I was impressed. The facilities are modern, clean and highly functional. This motivates you to learn and to be part of it,” he said.
School leaders also speak of a direct impact on the working climate. The principal of the “Mehmet Babamusta” school in Kavaja, Suela Guhaçaj, emphasizes the radical transformation.
“Not only has the building changed, but also the way we work. Teachers and students are more motivated because they now have much better conditions and dignified environments,” she said.
The program has also brought significant improvements for children in kindergartens, where safety and hygiene conditions have increased considerably, earning positive evaluations from parents.
Spread across municipalities such as Durrës, Shijak, Kavaja, Tirana, Kruja and Lezha, “EU4Schools” remains one of the largest interventions of the European Union in Albania, leaving behind a legacy that goes beyond buildings: a new standard for education and community.
