Habitat of Albanian Tulip Declared 'Natural Monument'
The habitat of the Albanian tulip is declared a "natural monument" category III according to government decisions.
Tulipa albanica is an endemic type of tulip that grows only in the Republic of Albania, in the district of Kukes. It is an endangered species as it grows on a territory of less than 80 hectares, or less than 1 km2 and is greatly endangered by mining activity in the area.
The Albanian tulip resembles the Sardinian tulip, Tulipa scardica and Tulipa schrenkii, but differs from them as it has wavy leaves and is genetically different.
According to the decision, the area declared a natural monument is 35.5 ha and a buffer zone of 200 m around the border of the protected area, in which the third level of protection is applied, the same as the strict reserve.
