Investigation Concluded, File on Murder of Ex Police Officer Sent to Court

Special Prosecution against Organized Crime and Corruption (SPAK) has concluded an investigation on the murder of former Police officer Santiago Malko and sent the file to court for adjudication.

Defendants for premeditated murder were taken: Leonard Duka, brother Erlis Duka, Ilir Selmani, Oltian Loga, Aleksandër Maxhaku, Fatmir Hyseni, Dritan Aga. The prosecution says the motive for the murder is the clash of two criminal groups that were in rivalry for illegal gambling activity.

On the one hand the Duka brothers and their men and on the other the former policeman Malko. The murder of the father of two children is preceded by two criminal events, according to SPAK. That of August 26, 2018, in a bar in Kinostudio, where Juxhin Hamajezi, Rovaldo Mumajesi and Ibrahim Durollari were injured, where Santiago Malko was suspected as the perpetrator, as well as the attempted murder of Erlis Duka.

According to SPAK, members of the criminal group Duka, as a sign of revenge, initially in May 2019, planned the murder of Ervis Martinaj, for whose location, although they received information, they could not find him to kill. From May until a week before Malko was killed, the suspects Fatmir Hyseni, known by the nickname "Dogja", Leonard Duka and Erlis Duka, provided information about the location of Malko's movements, in order to physically eliminate him.

They also paid a lot of money for the information they provided; "They received information about his movements, but they could not implement their plan", it is said in the file. They organized and carried out the murder of the former police officer, who was shot dead while traveling in his car on "Xhanfize Keko" street.

The evidence against the suspects is not only the testimony of the co-defendant Blendi Teta, which is being investigated in a separate trial, but also the DNA evidence in two cars, which were used in the murder. Police have discovered biological signs and obtained several DNA samples through them. To confirm the presence of the defendants in these vehicles, the DNAs were compared with the genetic profiles of their parents, which turned out to be compatible.
