SPAK's Statement after the Arrest of Tirana Mayor, Erion Veliaj

Through a long press statement, the Special Prosecution against Corruption (SPAK) explained the security measures given for the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, his wife and some businesmen. 

According to SPAK, Veliaj is accused for 'Passive Corruption', 'Active corruption', 'Money Laundry' and 'Refusal to declare assets'. 

SPAK declares that it has collected up to this stage of the preliminary investigation, by the citizens under investigation, specifically Erion Veliaj and the latter's wife, Ajola Xoxa created a mechanism and put into operation that aimed and made possible, in practice, the receipt of irregular benefits, which originate from public funds administered by the Municipality of Tirana, through its head, with the aim of personally enriching the latter and his family, through camouflaged and illegal actions. 

"In relation to the practices followed by these citizens, based on the evidence administered in the dossier, in at least 10 cases, reasonable suspicion is created for the commission of acts of a corrupt nature by the local elected official, as well as laundering of the proceeds of crime," says statement.
