Kukës Bridge Facilitates Access to Highway
Prime Minister Edi Rama has published on social networks images from the last phase of work on the construction of the new Kukës Bridge, part of the Milot-Morina highway linking Albania and Kosovo.
Rama said that after a long work, “the construction of a large public work like the New Bridge of Kukës, provides a solution to an old node connecting the two sides of the lake with the national road.” The PM also emphasized that the new bridge also brings a beautiful construction meaningful in terms of engineering and aesthetics.
The Great Bridge of Kukës connects the banks of the Drin River to the Milot-Morina highway. The new bridge has two concrete foundations on the shores of the lake, while its entire length is metal construction, with a large arch without intermediate legs. It is replacing the existing old bridge that has been carrying thousands of vehicles over the years for more than 45 years.
The investment of Dollar 30 million makes it an economic event for the area and the connection of Albania with Kosovo.
Due to the works for the sliding installation of the new bridge on its foundations, the traffic has been diverted to the Kukës-Morina segment, part of the Milot-Morina highway, and specifically, the diversion of traffic is taking place at Drini i Zi bridge - the entrance road to the city of Kukës, the exit for Kosovo at the junction of Shtiqn. As for the movement from Morina to Milot, the movement is being diverted to the exit ramp of the overpass at the new airport node and the exit to the Drini i Zi bridge.
The Great Kukës Bridge over the Drin River was designed by the Italian engineer Giorgio Rizzo. It has a total length of 310 meters, while the metal arch has a base of 270 meters, a height of 56 meters, and weighs about 5000 tons.
