Kurti Confirms Purchase of Bayraktar Drones from Turkey

Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has confirmed on Sunday that Kosovo has purchased the Bayraktar TB-2 drone from Turkey.

Kurti was seen near the drones, together with the Minister of Defense in Kosovo, Armend Mehaj and the commander of the Kosovo Security Force (FSK), Bashkim Jashari.

"Kosova is now even safer than always proud!" Kurti said, congratulating the KSF members who completed the training on the use of drones.

Kurti has not announced how many drones have been purchased, nor the budget allocated for them. Bayraktar (Flagship) is a relatively inexpensive drone that first flew in 2014. Such drones, of the TB-2 type, are used by the armies of several countries and have also been sent to Ukraine to help the forces of Kiev to fight against the Russian invasion.

Despite the fact that the price of a Bayraktari TB-2 has not been made public, earlier this year a fundraiser was organized to buy such drones for Ukraine, and the organizers of the fundraiser suggested that 5 million euros is enough for a drone. The Kosovo Security Force is in the process of being transformed into the Army.

Assembly of Kosovo approved the laws for this transformation in 2018. The new responsibilities of the KSF, among others, are related to the preservation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Kosovo, as well as the citizens, property and interests of the country.

Currently, the KSF has around 2,500 members. After the transition period, this number is expected to increase to over 7,500 and include active and reservist members.
