Lack of Rainfall, Power Imports to Continue

Heat waves and lack of rainfall have significantly reduced energy production during the summer months in the Drin cascade, the country's main source of supply.

As a result, the Albanian Power Corporation (KESH) has intervened in the international market to guarantee the supply of electricity in the country.

KESH has purchased 69,819 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity for the period 8-14 September, to cope with the growing demand and the reduction in domestic production due to the prolonged drought.

KESH managed to purchase this amount of energy in four lots. In the first lot, KESH purchased 39,144 MWh of electricity at a weighted price of 115.89 euros/MWh.

The highest contracted price was 118.10 euros/MWh, while the lowest contracted price was 114.60 euros/MWH. In the second lot, KESH purchased 14,875 MWh at a weighted price of 110.89 euros/MWh. The highest contracted price was 111.10 euros/MWh, while the lowest contracted price was 110.27 euros/MWh.

In the third lot, KESH purchased 15,400 MWh at a weighted price of 108.11 euros/MWh. The highest contracted price was 113.90 euros/MWh, while the lowest contracted price was 102.60 euros/MWh. In the fourth lot, KESH purchased 4,000 MWh at a weighted price of 170.95 euros/MWh.

Albania experiences significant increases in summer energy consumption, reaching record-high daily demand in August 2025, surpassing the historical peak of December 2024. This surge is driven by higher temperatures and increased use of air conditioners, exacerbated by growing tourist activity and a general trend of increased energy access and use. The country has met this demand, though it poses challenges for energy security, particularly due to lower hydropower production during the summer months.
