Major Landslide Blocks Qukës–Qafë Plloçë Road as Heavy Rains Trigger Mountain Collapse
A massive landslide of rocks and soil has struck the Qukës–Qafë Plloçë road segment near the tunnel area, fully blocking one of the country’s key roadway connections. The incident occurred after days of intense rainfall, which loosened a large section of the mountainside and sent it crashing onto the road.
According to maintenance authorities, the collapse has obstructed the entire roadway, forcing the contracted maintenance company to open a provisional bypass to allow limited vehicle passage. Drivers are urged to proceed with caution while using the temporary route.
The Qukës–Qafë Plloçë axis has experienced landslides before, but officials say that today’s event is the most severe to date. Crews are expected to begin clearing operations as soon as conditions allow, though authorities have not provided an estimate for when the main road will fully reopen.
Although the landslide caused significant disruption, there have been no reports of injuries. Local authorities are monitoring the area closely, and further safety measures are expected in the coming hours as rainfall continues to pose risks of additional slides.
