Opposition Protest Begins in Tirana, Heavy Police Presence Surrounds Prime Minister’s Office

As previously announced, an opposition protest led by the Democratic Party of Albania (PD) began at 6:00 p.m. local time in the capital, Tirana.

The party’s leader, Sali Berisha, initially arrived at the party’s headquarters — known as the “blue headquarters” — before setting off on foot toward the Prime Minister’s Office. Berisha was accompanied by a group of Democratic Party lawmakers and senior party officials.

At 18:34, Berisha left the headquarters and headed toward the main boulevard, where supporters had gathered in front of the government building, marking the central meeting point of the protest.

Authorities confirmed heightened security measures ahead of the rally. According to police, approximately 1,300 officers have been deployed around the Prime Minister’s Office. Law enforcement officials stated that their primary focus is the protection of state institutions and public order.

As in the protest held one week earlier, Tirana police announced they do not assume responsibility for the organization of the rally, while emphasizing that extensive preventive measures have been put in place. Anti-riot units have been equipped with water cannons, fire trucks and ambulances, should the situation escalate.

Vehicle traffic has been suspended near the bridge by the Police Directorate, and additional restrictions remain in effect in surrounding areas.

If the scenario mirrors previous demonstrations, tensions could rise, with authorities anticipating potential unrest, including the use of Molotov cocktails and pyrotechnic materials.

Unlike prior nationwide protests organized by the opposition, today’s rally is expected to proceed without formal speeches, marking a departure from earlier demonstrations.
