Prosecution Investigating Case of Arrestee Who Died in Hospital
The Prosecutor's Office of Tirana has started investigations after the death of Jani Rustemi, as his family members have reported to the Police for incorrect treatment.
Sources from the prosecution body confirm the registration of the proceedings after a referral from the Police Supervision Agency.
The 27-year-old died on Saturday after being in a coma for nearly two weeks, as the family claims that the young man was given an overdose of methadone, a type of drug used for drug addicts.
The young man was arrested for theft on April 13. According to the young man's medical record, he was given methadone for sedation, as he began to feel unwell due to heroin addiction. A day after he allegedly drank methadone, on April 15, Jani Rustemaj was taken to court, where, despite his health condition, it imposed a personal security measure of prison arrest.
On April 16, the 27-year-old was taken into custody, but the prison authorities did not accept to take him into custody - officially says the police - due to the overcrowding in this institution and under these conditions he returned and placed back in the Tirana Security Block.
On April 17, the arrested young man showed health concerns again and after the arrival of the health emergency, he was transported to the "Mother Teresa" hospital, where he was in a coma until he died on Saturday.
