Serbian Opposition Accuses Vucic of 'Handing Over' Kosovo

The special session in the Parliament of Serbia, where Kosovo is being discussed, started with a verbal and physical clash between the opposition MPs and the Serbian president, Aleksandar Vucic. Vucic has spoken about the European or Franco-German plan for the normalization of relations with Kosovo, while the opposition has described this plan as "capitulation for Serbia".

However, from the beginning the session was tense, because the opposition representatives continuously insulted Vucic during his speech, for which the Speaker of the Parliament, Vladimir Orlic, warned them several times.

At one point, while Vucic was speaking very harshly, accusing the former government of releasing the current Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, from criminal prosecution in 2001, showing a list of 1,800 Albanians released, the opposition MPs showed him the regulation.

"For them, the rule of law is the heart of Serbia," said Vucic, after which government and opposition MPs rose from their seats, leading to physical clashes.

During the session, the opposition MPs chanted slogans "Traitors", "Kosovo is the heart of Serbia" and "We will not give up Kosovo". They also carried placards with the inscription "No capitulation".

At the start of the debate, Vucic said that "today's goal is not to put the responsibility on the institution or the people.

"The goal is to come before you and the citizens and honestly and openly share what awaits us and what we are facing. What is more important is that the plan is the political framework, the moment in which everything happens", said Vucic.

The Serbian president said that he told the team of European and US diplomats, with whom he talked on January 20 in Belgrade, that he has great reservations about the key issue.

"There are also good things in the plan, I will not talk about them", he added.

The EU proposal, or as it is also known as the Franco-German plan, is also supported by the United States. The plan has not been made public, but has been presented to the parties.

The head of the parliamentary group of the Union of Hungarians of Vojvodina, Balint Pastor, in his speech said that peace and stability should be the first priority for all citizens of Serbia. He said that the proposals for the solution of the Kosovo issue "are getting worse with the passage of time".

At the end of his speech in the Assembly, Vucic declared that if Kosovo becomes a member of the United Nations, the Constitution of Serbia will be a "holy book" for him.
