Sirens Heard in North Kosovo as Serbs Block the Roads

Alarm sirens were heard at noon on Friday in the four municipalities with a Serbian majority in the north of Kosovo, while citizens also gathered in front of the municipal buildings in Zubin Potok, Zveçan and Leposaviq.

In front of the municipality building in Zveçan there are also cars of the Kosovo Police. The latter has not yet come out with information about what it is about.

The former councillor in the Municipal Assembly of Zubin Potok, Milija Bishevac, said that the citizens have gathered in front of the municipality building, convinced that "the newly elected mayor, Izmir Zeqiri, is trying to enter the building".

"There are cars, where it is believed that he [the mayor] is and that he is trying to enter the municipality building", said Bishevac.

Zeqiri was not available to confirm this information.

Bishevac said members of the Kosovo Police and the EU Rule of Law Mission, EULEX, are around the municipality building.

"People have gathered there and we will wait to see what happens," he added.

EULEX did not confirm why it is present in the municipality of Zubin Potok.

The new mayors of the municipalities of Zveçan, Leposaviq and Zubin Potok - all Albanians - were sworn in on May 25, thus taking local power in these three municipalities with a Serb majority in the north of Kosovo.

The swearing-in ceremonies were held in public facilities, because in the facilities of the municipalities there are temporary municipal bodies, which work in the Serbian system.

Only in North Mitrovica there is a municipal building that functions according to the Kosovo system. The new mayor, Erden Atiq, was sworn in there on May 19.

The local elections in the north of Kosovo were held on April 23, after the resignation of the mayors from the ranks of the Serb List - the largest party of the Kosovo Serbs. This party opposed the decision of the Government of Kosovo to carry out the process of re-registration of cars with illegal Serbian license plates.
