SPAK Seeks Assets' Confiscation of 'Drug Lord'
The Special Prosecution against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) has requested the confiscation of 8 assets of Alket Hatija, also known as "Drug Lord". It is about 8 properties which are owned by Hatia, his wife's brother, which according to SPAK's arguments are of unjustified origin.
The assets that are requested to be confiscated by SPAK include apartments, garages, vehicles as well as a hotel belonging to the Hatia family, which after investigations was returned by the decision of the Court of Appeal.
Alket Hatija, also known as "Baron" or "Drug Lord" after trafficking 540 kilograms of heroin and cocaine in Italy in 2003-2004, was extradited on August 30 to Italy, where he will serve a 20-year prison sentence. granted by the Court of Appeal of Milan in 2015.
The 50-year-old, who fought at all levels of the judiciary to avoid extradition, was caught on Wednesday in the early hours of the morning at his hotel in the city of Durrës. The police intervened around 04:00, when the long-wanted for five years had just woken up from his sleep and was feeding the chickens in an area behind the hotel.
According to the investigations in Italy, 20 years ago Alket Hatija, in cooperation with 40 other people, transported large quantities of heroin and cocaine from Albania. Hatija was arrested in 2017, but a few months later the Court of Durrës refused extradition and lifted the measure "Arrest in prison", a decision that was also upheld by the Appeal.
Subsequently, the Supreme Court once again returned it to the First Instance, which this time together with the Appellant accepted the extradition.
But, Alket Hatija did not give up, from the escape and through his defenders he sent the case to the Constitutional Court, which finally put an end to the judicial ordeal on January 31, 2022, leaving in effect his final extradition to Milan. The arrest of Alket Hatija, known as the drug lord, was made in the premises of a hotel in Durrës, on August 30, who was taking food for the chickens, in a white bucket.
