TAP; 0.16 bcm/year of Gas Capacity to Enter Albania
Natural gas transportation company Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) said on Wednesday that it has made available an additional capacity of 0.16 billion cubic metres (bcm) per year for transport from Greece to Albania's new exit point in the south-central town of Roskovec.
Starting October 1, TAP has made bidirectional interconnection point in the village of Nea Mesimvria west of Thessaloniki, giving the Albanian gas system access to gas flowing from the Greek gas transmission system through TAP, TAP told SeeNews in an emailed statement.
"From 1 October 2026, the Nea Mesimvria interconnection point became bidirectional and therefore constitutes the second physical entry point into the TAP system. This development enables gas flows in both directions between TAP and the Greek natural gas transmission system and strengthens market integration and flexibility in response to evolving market conditions," TAP said.
Albania currently lacks a natural gas transmission and distribution network capable of delivering gas from TAP to end-users. In November 2024, Albania’s infrastructure ministry and Azerbaijan's state-owned gas company SOCAR, a shareholder in TAP, signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a natural gas distribution system in Albania’s southern city of Korca.
TAP mainly transports gas coming from Azerbaijan - from its eastern entry point in Kipoi at Greece's border with Turkey, with the Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP), through Greece and Albania to Italy, TAP says on its website.
