Swedish Ambassador Meets PM Rama after Decision to Apply for NATO Membership
The Ambassador of Sweden to Albania, Elsa Hastad has informed the Prime Minister Edi Rama on the decision of the government of her country to apply as a member of NATO.
The Embassy has published a photo from the moment of the meeting with the Prime Minister, where it indicates that during the meeting, Ambassador Hastad has requested the support of Albania, as a full member.
"This is a historic moment. Meeting with Prime Minister Edi Rama, informing about Sweden's decision to submit an application for NATO membership. Thank you, Prime Minister, for the very good and supportive meeting," reads the embassy post.
Sweden has joined Finland in its decision to apply for membership in the NATO military alliance as the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine continues. The announcement from Stockholm comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow would "certainly" react to a possible NATO enlargement.
"The government has decided to inform NATO that Sweden wants to become a member of NATO. Sweden's ambassador to NATO will soon inform NATO," said Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson on May 16.
