US Embassy Recalls Construction of Berlin Wall
The US Embassy in Tirana has recalled the construction of the Berlin Wall, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of its creation. Through a social media post, the embassy says it was an infamous wall, which was constructed over historic divisions.
According to the embassy, that wall was a thorny barrier which turned into 155-kilometer concrete wall blocks.
The embassy says the Berlin Wall separated the democratic West Berlin from the Soviet-controlled East Berlin from 1961 to 1989.
“Sixty years ago, on this day (August 13, 1961), Berlin woke up to a shock: The East German Army had begun construction on the infamous Berlin Wall. A symbol of a divided city within a divided nation within a divided continent, the Berlin Wall was grounded in decades-old historical divisions. A barbed-wire barrier that became a 155-kilometer network of concrete walls, the Berlin Wall divided democratic West Berlin from Soviet-controlled East Berlin from 1961 until 1989,†it is written in the official page of US Embassy.
