Vucic Explains EU Doubts over ‘Open Balkan’ Initiative

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic commented on the "Open Balkan" initiative while giving an interview to a Serbian television, explaining that EU has doubts because they have no control over it.

Vucic says that "Open Balkan" is a fantastic idea for the Balkans as people have been dreaming of it for a century and a half while some were suffering from this idea.

So far only 3 countries are participating in this initiative, Albania, Serbia and Northern Macedonia, but Vucic claims that together with the Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, they laugh when they receive comments why other countries in the region do not want to join this initiative.

"The Open Balkans is a fantastic idea, the Balkans is a fantastic idea for the Balkans, people have been dreaming of it for a century and a half. Some even suffered because of that idea. We should not serve anyone else, we should respect our neighbours. Edi Rama and I sometimes laugh when we get comments why they do not want to enter the open Balkans," said Vucic.

The Serbian president says that the US was supporting the initiative from the beginning, while for the Europeans he emphasizes that they have reservations for 'Open Balkan' because they are not behind the wheel.

"America has been with that project from the beginning and I'm grateful to the Americans. The Americans were fair in judgement, while the Europeans had reservations because they are not behind the wheel. We can be the engine of economic growth in the EU. The Balkans will again have the highest growth rate next year,” said the Serbian President.

On the other hand, Vuçiç did not leave without mentioning the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, whom he says is uncomfortable to talk to, but recently ironically it is easier because he will not talk to him at all.

"You see, someone does not want to talk about the future because they are not interested in it,” Vucic said.
