Coronavirus Cuts Albania's Tourism in Half

The pandemic has halved the number of tourist stays in the country. According to INSTAT, at the peak of the tourist season the number of visitors has decreased by 43.3% compared to last year, and overnight stays were reduced by 44.9% for the period July-September.

Although there has been an influx of holiday-makers from Kosovo during the hot months, again the gap of foreign tourists created by the pandemic restrictive measures has not been filled.

Mountain, cultural and historical tourism has been most affected by restrictive measures and tourist shortages. If for the sea the summer gave a green light, for the mountain the fall continues.

According to data in the northern region, the number of visitors fell by 57.4%, and overnight stays by 50.4%.

During the third quarter of the year, the rooms of "Hotels and similar accommodation" were used by 19.2%, compared to 38.2% in the third quarter of 2019. The rate of use of beds in "Hotels and similar accommodation" is 18.4%, compared to 43.4% in the third quarter of 2019.

All data speak of a gloomy picture that shows tourism, this was also evidenced by the data of the Bank of Albania, where the economic activity of this sector was most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
