Albania Declares Iran a State Sponsor of Terrorism, Israel Welcomes Move
Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar on Tuesday welcomed a resolution passed by Parliament of Albania declaring Iran a state sponsor of terrorism, praising the move as a “clear demonstration” of Albania’s foreign policy principles.
In a public reaction, Sa’ar congratulated Prime Minister Edi Rama and the Albanian legislature for what he described as a “historic resolution” labeling the Islamic Republic of Iran as a supporter of terrorism.
“Terrorism in all its forms constitutes one of the most serious threats to democratic societies,” Sa’ar said, echoing language from the resolution. He added that the decision reflects “the moral dimension” of Albania’s foreign policy.
Earlier Tuesday, Albania’s parliament approved the resolution with 79 votes in favor. There were no votes against, and one abstention by lawmaker Redi Muçi. Opposition parties did not participate in the session, following a decision to boycott.
During the parliamentary debate, Taulant Balla, head of the ruling Socialist Party’s parliamentary group, said terrorism goes beyond acts of violence and represents a direct attack on democratic order.
Balla reaffirmed Albania’s stance alongside the rule of law and condemned all forms of support for aggression. He also referenced a past cyberattack targeting Albanian institutions, describing it as a hostile act.
Additionally, he called on lawmakers to support efforts to designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization.
The plenary session, which lasted approximately 22 minutes, concluded shortly after the vote.
