Police Warn of Cyber Fraud Scheme Targeting Bank Customers Through Fake Text Messages

Albania’s State Police has issued a warning about a cyber fraud scheme targeting citizens through text messages sent in the name of banks, in an attempt to steal personal and financial information.

According to the police, the fraudulent messages urge recipients to verify their identity within 24 or 31 hours, directing them to malicious links that lead to fake websites designed to resemble official banking platforms.

The scheme, known as “smishing,” involves the use of fraudulent text messages to trick victims into revealing sensitive information, including bank card numbers, passwords and verification codes. Criminals can then use these details to gain access to victims’ accounts and carry out unauthorized transactions.

Police are urging citizens not to click on suspicious links or share banking details, PINs or security codes through text messages or unverified websites.

Anyone who has already entered their information on a fraudulent website is advised to contact their bank immediately to block their card or suspend access to their account.

Meanwhile, Cybercrime Investigation Structures are working to identify those responsible for the scheme.

Citizens are also encouraged to report any suspicious messages or attempted fraud to the police.
