The deadlock within Albania’s High Prosecutorial Council (KLP) over the selection process for a new Prosecutor General is continuing, with another candidate calling for the recusal of a KLP member.

Prosecutor Arta Marku, who has once again expressed her intention to compete for the position of Prosecutor General, has requested the recusal of the member Sokol Stojani.

Marku argues that Stojani has a conflict of interest and would not be able to assess her candidacy impartially. Her argument is based on events dating back to her tenure as Acting Prosecutor General, when Marku removed Stojani from his position as Director of Investigations.

The request adds another layer of tension to an already stalled selection process.

Previous requests have also been made for KLP members to withdraw from the proceedings, including requests initiated by members of the Council themselves.

The dispute comes as the deadlines for submitting candidates’ forms to Albania’s High Inspectorate for the Declaration and Audit of Assets and Conflicts of Interest (ILDKPKI) have already passed, while the KLP has yet to resolve its internal disputes.

The continuing disagreements have raised questions over the progress and credibility of the process for selecting Albania’s next Prosecutor General.
