Albania's Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing for September 15 to review the security measure imposed on Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj, according to local media reports.

The case will be examined in chambers at 9:30 a.m. as local media reported.

The hearing follows guidance issued by Albania's Constitutional Court regarding the legal review of Veliaj's detention. His lawyer, Plarent Ndreca, has urged the Supreme Court to give priority to the case, arguing that the Constitutional Court's ruling should be implemented without further delay.

Ndreca maintains that the legal grounds for Veliaj's continued detention no longer exist and that the proportional measure would be his release, allowing him to resume his duties as mayor of the Albanian capital.

"The Supreme Court should address the issues raised by the Constitutional Court. The proportional decision is his release and the restoration of his ability to carry out his responsibilities as mayor," Ndreca said.

The defense rejected suggestions that it had delayed the proceedings, stating that Veliaj had been absent from court on only two occasions throughout the process. Ndreca stressed that the current proceedings concern only the security measure, not the trial on the merits of the case.

According to the defense, two requests have been submitted to the Supreme Court seeking an expedited review because of the public importance of the case, given that Veliaj remains the sitting mayor of Tirana.

Ndreca argued that both Veliaj's personal right to liberty and the public interest should be taken into account, claiming that his continued detention has negatively affected the functioning of Tirana's municipal administration.
