Albanian Opposition Demands Minister’s Resignation Over Alleged Offensive Message, Government Denies Claims

Albania’s opposition has called for the immediate resignation of Europe and Foreign Affairs Minister Feri Hoxha following the circulation of an alleged WhatsApp message that has sparked political controversy, claims the government firmly denies.

Gazment Bardhi, head of the Democratic Party’s parliamentary group, described the purported message as “scandalous and offensive,” alleging it contained derogatory language toward ethnic Albanians in North Macedonia. According to Bardhi, the message included the phrase: “What are those Albanian idiots there saying?”, reportedly in reference to a discussion involving an article published by “Nova Makedonija” about a statement by Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Bardhi condemned the alleged language as unacceptable for a senior government official, arguing it violates constitutional norms and undermines national dignity. He drew comparisons to historical anti-Albanian rhetoric, invoking figures such as Nikola Paši? and Vasa ?ubrilovi?.

The opposition lawmaker called on Hoxha to resign without delay, warning that any hesitation would be unjustifiable. He also urged Prime Minister Rama to dismiss the minister immediately and publicly distance himself from what he described as an insult to Albanians and a stain on the Republic of Albania.

However, Albania’s Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs has categorically rejected the allegations. Spokesperson Alteo Hysi stated that the messages circulating on social media are false and fabricated.

“The publications being spread on social media, which claim to present internal communications, are untrue and have no connection to reality. The communication presented to the public is nonexistent,” Hysi said, adding that it is concerning such claims are being fabricated and then amplified by political actors.

Hysi further emphasized that this is not the first time allegations of this nature have targeted members of the diplomatic service, warning that such claims risk undermining the integrity of public institutions.

No independent verification of the alleged message has been reported so far.
