Govt Extends Validity of IDs, Passports

The Albanian Government has decided to extend the validity of ID cards and biometric passports which expire before April 25, until April 30.

This decision was taken during the last meeting of the Council of Ministers in order to give the possibility to everyone to vote on April 25 although their documents expire. 

For days the Interior Minister, Bledi Çuçi; the calls of the President of the Republic, Ilir Meta; Head of the Central Election Commission (CEC), Ilirjan Celibashi and the Albanian opposition called to postpone expiration date for these citizens. 

“On an amendment to law No.8952, date 10.10.2002, 'On the electronic identity card of Albanian citizens', as amended, Pursuant to Article 101 of the Constitution, on the proposal of the Minister of Interior, the Council of Ministers decided

Article 9/2, of law no. 89952, dated 10.10.2002, 'On the electronic identity card of Albanian citizens', as amended, is amended as follows:

The term of validity of the electronic identity card of Albanian citizens, which ends until April 25, 2021, is extended until April 30, 2021,” says decision.
