SPAK Seeks Probation Instead of Prison for Monika Kryemadhi's Mother

Albania's Special Anti-Corruption Structure (SPAK) has requested that the court sentence Fatime Kryemadhi, the mother of opposition politician Monika Kryemadhi, to probation instead of prison in a money laundering case linked to the purchase of a luxury villa worth nearly €800,000.

During closing arguments, Special Prosecutor Sotir Kllapi asked the court to find Fatime Kryemadhi guilty of money laundering. Prosecutors initially sought a prison sentence of seven years and six months, which would be reduced to five years under Albania's fast-track trial procedure. Citing her age, however, SPAK requested that the prison term be converted into five years of probation.

Prosecutors also asked the court to confiscate assets considered equivalent in value to the funds allegedly laundered, despite the property being formally supported by lawful financial documentation. According to SPAK, the alleged money laundering scheme involved obtaining two bank loans to purchase apartments, with the loans later repaid using large cash payments.

SPAK also requested the conviction of Pirro Xhixho, the former head of Albania's Electronic and Postal Communications Authority (AKEP). Prosecutors allege that Xhixho improperly influenced executives at a mobile telecommunications company in connection with an interconnection agreement that benefited the former political couple, Monika Kryemadhi and former President Ilir Meta. Prosecutors argued that his actions facilitated corruption by helping generate financial benefits allegedly linked to businessman Ardian Shatku.

Xhixho faces a requested sentence of four years and six months in prison, reduced to three years under the fast-track procedure. Prosecutors also asked the court to convert that sentence into probation, citing his age and the absence of evidence that he personally profited from the alleged scheme.

In addition, SPAK requested a seven-year prison sentence for Ema Çoku, described by prosecutors as a close associate of Monika Kryemadhi. Under the fast-track procedure, the sentence would be reduced to four years and eight months. Prosecutors also asked the court to suspend the prison sentence and place Çoku on probation for five years.

The court has yet to issue a verdict. All requested sentences remain prosecutorial proposals until the court reaches a final decision.
