Appellate’s Judge Sollaku Undergoes Vetting, Faces Assets-Related Issues

Judge of Tirana’s Appellate Court, Zegjine Sollaku has faced Thursday the Independent Qualification Commission (IQC), in the framework of the vetting process, where numerous problems with her assets were identified.

Administrative investigation into Zegjine Sollaku was conducted by the panel chaired by Xhensila Pine, with rapporteur Lulzim Hamitaj and member Suela Zhegu, where Francesco Ciardi was also present as an international observer.

During the public hearing, the Appellate Judge was accompanied by her husband, the former General Prosecutor, Theodhori Sollaku, in his capacity as a lawyer. In the session, inaccuracies in the statements and lack of financial resources in the total value of ALL 7 million were identified.

According to the report of the Commission, the Sollaku couple owns 8 apartments, verified by the administrative investigation, several garages, as well as two cars.

The judge was positively assessed for the purity of the figure, and no problems were identified for the criterion of professionalism as the report stated that no clues were found in the 58 denunciations made by the public, where 20 of them were repeated and filed by the same person.

Meanwhile, Rapporteur Hamitaj said that during the investigation for professionalism, delays were identified in the start of court hearings or in the submission of reasoned decisions.

On his part, Lawyer Sollaku objected to the commission's finding, saying that, as it turned out from the administrative investigation, all financial transactions were carried out by him, while adding that the his wife had always been focused on her job.

He even presented to the commission a summary of his income and expenditure balances from 1991 onwards, claiming that he had sufficient legal resources to create the assets. At the end of the session, Zegjine Sollaku asked the commission to confirm her in office, but the decision is expected to be announced no sooner than July 8.
