Beleri Case, PM Refuses to 'Fuel Debate' with Greece

The Prime Minister, Edi Rama, in a communication to the media, was asked about the "Fredi Beleri" issue and whether he fears a blockade from Greece for EU integration.

Rama said that he does not want to comment on the "threat" of Greece, as he will not fuel a debate where, according to him, the government is not a party.

Regarding the possibility of Greece blocking the integration, Rama emphasized that it could, but if it happens then he will comment on it.

"The opinion I have received is the one that has put me in this position where I am, that we did not set the government in motion to dismiss the elected mayor of Himara, despite the fact that he did not show up for office under conditions of impossibility.

As for the threat, I have said my opinion, I don't want to comment on that every time I'm asked, because I don't want to fuel a debate where we're not a party. The government is not a party in the process.

The government has no role to play here. Perhaps in the past the government could play the role it was used to playing. It would put the justice system in favour of the demands of foreigners.

Can Greece?

Yes, it can. And then? If that will happen, when it does you will hear my comment. It would not be serious for Albania, which is known worldwide today, as a country different from what it was, either by international opinion or by international institutions, to be blocked for an issue that is not at all of EU integration. It is an issue that is minor even in the bilateral aspect," Rama said.
