Deal with Italy, Memaliaj Mayor Offers to Host Immigrants

The mayor of Memaliaj, Albert Malaj, admits that he forwarded a letter-proposal to Prime Minister Edi Rama for housing refugees in the territory of the municipality that he leads.

Albert Malaj admits that he started the letter a little while ago by offering the country's prime minister two places that would be suitable for housing the refugees who will come from Italy. The first place is the two-story building of the former 8-year-old school of Memaliaj, which is unusable to this day.

While the second place is the former hospital of Memaliaj, a three-story building. Both of these buildings are located inside the city. While other places are thought to be open in the field. According to Malaj, the two buildings must first be invested in so that they are suitable for accommodating refugees, and while this municipality does not have the financial capacity to change them physically, Malaj has requested an assessment of the accommodation and investment conditions from the Albanian government.

The total accommodation capacity is estimated at around 1000 people. The Mayor of Memaliaj states that this initiative and self-offering for the shelter of refugees is based on his personal experience, as a former soldier who served in the Albanian FA in missions abroad such as in Afghanistan or conflict zones, he has faced and manage such refugee flows. In addition, Memaliaj has its hosting and accommodation experience since 1999 when it hosted thousands of Kosovars during the war.
