Democratic Party Schedules New Protest for February 28
Democratic Party of Albania has announced a new protest set for February 28, party leader Sali Berisha said in a message to party structures. The announcement comes less than two weeks after violent clashes marked the February 20 demonstration outside the Parliament and Prime Minister’s office.
In his message, Berisha congratulated party members for the “significant success” of the February 20 rally, describing it as a historic moment for their peaceful movement. He urged local and regional party officials, MPs, municipal leaders, and grassroots supporters to mobilize fully for the next protest, emphasizing maximum citizen participation. The time and location of the February 28 protest have not yet been disclosed and will be announced on Monday.
“Starting tomorrow, with the energy and inspiration of February 20, we begin the next battle! Knock on every door, in every neighborhood, block, street, village, and workplace to ensure the highest participation of Albanians in the protest on Saturday, February 28,” Berisha wrote.
The February 20 demonstration ended with renewed clashes, including Molotov cocktails and fireworks, particularly outside the Prime Minister’s office and later in front of Parliament on Bulevardi “Dëshmorët e Kombit.” Authorities had not approved the protest due to violence during an earlier February 10 rally.
The upcoming February 28 protest marks a continuation of tensions between opposition activists and security forces, as Albania monitors political demonstrations ahead of upcoming elections.
