Durres-Tirana Railway to Be Operative in 2027

Prime Minister Edi Rama stated on Monday during a meeting with the Socialist Party parliamentary group that the government has a clear and concrete plan for the revival of the railway infrastructure in Albania, by electrifying it according to European Union standards and integrating it into European networks.

According to the Prime Minister, in the last six years, concrete projects have been developed for the construction of 500 kilometers of railway, starting with the first electric line in the country. The Durrës-Tirana Railway, currently under construction, will have 12 stations and is expected to start operating early next year.

The Vora-Hani i Hotit project, connecting Albania with Montenegro, is currently in the procurement phase and is expected to start next year, with completion by 2030. Part of Corridor VIII, the Durres-Rrogozhina line, will start construction at the end of this year and is expected to be completed in 2028, while the Rrogozhina-Pogradec project is in the design phase.

In cooperation with the government of Kosova, the feasibility study and preliminary design for the National Railway, with a length of 105 km, including 14 tunnels and 43 bridges, has been completed.

Meanwhile, the possibilities for the construction of two new railway lines are being examined: Vlora-Vlora Airport and Sukth-Porto Romano, and the construction of the Durres-Vlora line is planned.

Prime Minister Rama stressed that for the first time in six years, the government has a detailed and feasible plan to return the Albanian railway to the path of modernization and integration into European networks, guaranteeing high technical and functional standards.

During his speech, Rama also stated that the energy supply market has been regulated, allowing medium and high voltage customers to operate in the free energy market.

He also announced that the energy efficiency program has included 400 households and is expected to support many more.

Since its creation in 2024, energy sales volumes have increased by 50%, strengthening the international integration of energy projects with Kosova and North Macedonia, and working to triple capacities with Greece and build a transmission line with Italy.

Rama announced that investments are also being focused on the rehabilitation of the Drin Cascade, including Power Corporation KESH projects with the support of the United Arab Emirates, including the 120 megawatt photovoltaic park in Tragjas, Vlora.

Rama further said that “the construction of the new commercial and military port in Porto Romano will triple the country’s port capacities and will create a free economic zone, paving the way for the construction of two new dry ports in Pristina and Skopje”.

This investment, according to Rama, creates an important economic and strategic logistical point, not only for the region, but also as an added value for the European Union and NATO.
