Ethics Committee to Review Calls for Suspension of 20 Opposition MPs After Clashes

The committee is scheduled to meet online at 10 a.m. to consider Socialist Party requests for disciplinary action following confrontations during a parliamentary session.

Albania’s Parliamentary Ethics Committee is scheduled to meet online at 10 a.m. today to review a request by Socialist Party lawmakers to suspend 20 Democratic Party MPs following clashes during a parliamentary session the previous day.

Socialist lawmakers are seeking a two-month suspension for six opposition MPs — Flamur Noka, Belind Këlliçi, Edi Paloka, Fidel Kreka, Luçiano Boçi and Besart Xhaferri. They have also requested a 10-day suspension for 14 other Democratic Party lawmakers accused of blocking the parliamentary podium and disrupting proceedings.

According to the Socialist Party’s complaint, Noka clashed with Parliament Speaker Niko Peleshi and Socialist parliamentary group leader Taulant Balla, while Democratic Party MP Fidel Kreka was involved in a confrontation with former minister Ervin Hoxha.

The complaint also alleges that several opposition lawmakers insulted Socialist MPs and threw water bottles at them during the voting process. The allegations are detailed in the request submitted to the Ethics Committee.

The 14 MPs facing proposed 10-day suspensions are Gjin Gjoni, Bardh Spahia, Albana Vokshi, Elda Hoti, Xhelal Mziu, Gent Strazimiri, Enno Bozdo, Kastriot Piroli, Kliti Hoti, Flamur Hoxha, Arjan Ndoja, Ivi Kaso, Zija Ismaili and Blendi Himçi. Socialist lawmakers accuse them of blocking the podium and preventing the parliamentary session from proceeding normally.
