Ex-Gang Leader Seeks Freedom, Hearing Postponed

Korca Court has postponed Thursday session for the notorious former leader of Vlora gang Myrteza Caushi, known as Zani Caushi, who demands to be released on parole.

During the session held under strict security measures, the Court decided to trial Caushi on April 9.

On October 29, 2020, the former gang leader appeared before the Court of Korca, where he demanded accurate calculation of sentence days starting from the time he was arrested, the time he has stayed in detention.

The imprisoned shot caller has requested twice within this year to be released from prison and claimed that he has already served 25 years in prison and that he was a family man. Caushi was sentenced to life imprisonment and is serving his sentence in the Drenova prison in Korça.

On its part, the court decided today that the file of Zani Çaushi is administered. Meanwhile, his lawyer, Arben Lera told the media that at the end of the process a clearer idea will be created for the file.

"We have a complex file. The court rightly decided that the entire file is with all acts administered. By being administered in court, then we will have a clearer idea for Chaushi's file.

So, we will have a clear picture of the way how criminal decisions have been made. We have two criminal decisions. It is a general principle, freedom of the individual is the basic foundation. The state has the court, the prosecution, the police and the courts. Individuals must not have their rights violated", said Lera at the time.
