Former Albania National Footballer Igli Tare Charged With Money Laundering

The Special Prosecution Office (SPAK) has formally informed former national footballer Igli Tare of money laundering charges, amid allegations that he registered two villas belonging to former Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku in his own name.

Tare appeared at SPAK early Wednesday morning. The allegations have not been established in court.

The development comes a day after prosecutors formally notified Balluku of charges in a separate corruption investigation. She has been charged with five criminal offenses allegedly committed in 15 instances, according to the information provided.

The investigation includes a €190 million contract for the construction of the Llogara Tunnel and a €20 million contract for Lot 4 of Tirana’s Greater Ring Road.

SPAK alleges that Balluku predetermined the winners of both tenders through oversight and interference throughout the procurement processes. The allegations remain subject to judicial proceedings.
