Inflation at 1.9% in Jan, Meat-Dairy Prices Soar

According to the INSTAT report, Inflation in January increased by 1.9%, but in some products, such as meat and dairy products, the increase was above this level.

The annual change in the consumer price index in January 2025 was 1.9%, while a year ago this change was 3.4%.

The annual increase in prices in January was mainly influenced by the group “Food and non-alcoholic beverages” with 0.91 percentage points, followed by the group “Furniture, household equipment and home maintenance” with 0.29 pps.

Also, the prices of the group “Alcoholic beverages and tobacco” affected the overall inflation increase by 0.19 pps, the prices of the group “Rent, water, fuel and energy” by 0.18 pps, the prices of the groups “Clothing and footwear” and “Entertainment and culture” by 0.12 pps each, the prices of the groups “Hotels, cafes and restaurants” and “Various goods and services” by 0.09 pps each.

Compared to January 2024, the largest price increase is observed in the “Entertainment and culture” group by 5.7%, followed by the “Alcoholic beverages and tobacco” and “Furniture, household equipment, and home maintenance” groups by 3.9% each, “Clothing and footwear” by 3.3%, “Food and non-alcoholic beverages” by 2.6%, “Hotels, cafes, and restaurants” by 1.7%, “Various goods and services” by 1.6%, “Communication” by 1.2%, “Rent, water, fuel and energy”, “Health” and “Educational services” by 0.9% each. On the other hand, the prices of the “Transport” group decreased by 2.5%.

Within the food group, the prices of the subgroup “meat” increased by 4.0%, followed by the subgroups “milk, cheese and eggs” by 3.3%, “vegetables including potatoes” by 3.0%, “fish” by 2.0%, “sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery” by 1.4%, etc.

Compared to December 2024, the prices of the group “Food and non-alcoholic beverages” increased by 0.9%, followed by the groups “Furniture, household equipment and home maintenance” and “Miscellaneous goods and services” by 0.3% each, “Alcoholic beverages and tobacco” and “Entertainment and culture” by 0.2% each, “Health” and “Educational services” by 0.1% each. On the other hand, the prices of the group “Clothing and footwear” decreased by 0.3%.

Meanwhile, despite the increased tourist flows, inflation in bars and restaurants remained at historic lows, averaging 1.8%.
