A Journey That Raises Questions About the Future: “GOCAT” Opens the U.F.O Exhibition by Ardian Isufi
The latest exhibition, “Unidentified False Objects” (U.F.O), has opened at “GOCAT,” the largest contemporary art gallery in Tirana, by Mane Foundation. This unique showcase, created by artist Ardian Isufi, was specifically conceived for “GOCAT” space and will remain open to the public until February 2025.
Located in the Pyramid of Tirana, one of the capital’s most iconic landmarks, the gallery enhances the impact of images, objects, and artifacts that reflect on the past while addressing the ideology of the communist system—its propaganda, manipulation, and distortions. The exhibition also examines the socio-absurd scenarios of Albania’s transitional period, all with a central focus on the human experience.
On the opening night, attended by art enthusiasts, public figures, and numerous artists, Ardian Isufi described his work as a personal mark to deliver and represent radical, political art. He emphasized its capacity to stimulate reflective thought on social and urban issues, navigating the tension between utopias and dystopias.
Ena Bulku, Artistic Director of “GOCAT,” praised the exhibition as a multidimensional experience where visitors can interact with each piece. “It is a turning point where the past merges with the present, leaving questions for the future,” she noted.
Curator Elton Koritari highlighted an intriguing detail about “U.F.O”
“This is a site-specific exhibition, created for ‘GOCAT.’ Even works that had a prior journey were modified and transformed to fit this gallery,” he explained.
The exhibition promises an evocative journey that begins with a bunker recovered from the village of Lin, near Pogradec, which has been transformed into a miniature Orthodox church—unlike the thousands of communist-era bunkers. Visitors are then introduced to a jet fuel tank repurposed into a drinking water reservoir, alongside other striking stops such as videos, installations, and more. These pieces challenge perspectives on historical heritage, urban landscape changes, and geo-cultural spaces, among other issues. The adventure is open to everyone, free of charge.
“GOCAT” offers itself as a free space for art lovers and a platform for artists to promote their work.
