Justice Minister Reveals Details on Albania-UK Deal on Prisoners
The Minister of Justice, Ulsi Manja, showed details of the agreement between Albania and the United Kingdom regarding the transfer of Albanian prisoners to the country.
In a communication to the media, after the government meeting, Manja said that the contract in question is for 2 years, while the entire cost will be covered by Great Britain.
"We have an agreement, a technical agreement, that completes the agreement ratified in the Assembly in 2021. The criteria are defined in the 2021 agreement. The agreement we reached now is guided by the principles of humanity, so that these citizens come to serve their sentences with their family members. For years and years, they have had no contact with their family members in Albania. The agreement does not create any costs for the Directorate of Prisons or the budget of Albania, since the costs will be paid by the United Kingdom, for each day of the prisoners' stay here.
The agreement provides for a two-year duration, to be reviewed after two years. Those Albanians who want to come to Albania, we will start from our capacity. This will depend on the seats we have available. UK has undertaken to help us to increase our capacities, as well as to create other capacities," said Manja.
