Kosovo PM Recalls Vushtrri Massacre Victims
The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albi Kurti, recalled the Massacre in Studime of Vushtrri, stating that the blood shed for freedom is never atoned for, just like the crimes of Serbia.
While he is in Brussels, where he will meet with the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, Kurti has called for justice to reveal the truth and criminals to be punished, as war crimes do not expire.
"In the first days of May 1999, Serbian forces burned the villages of Vushtrri and forcibly expelled the inhabitants. They ordered them to leave towards Albania. On May 2, 1999, in the village of Studime in Vushtrri, Serbian forces took out the convoy and shot 116 Albanian civilians. They executed children in front of their parents, killed young and old, and even pregnant women. 36 members of the Gërxaliu family were killed, from the age of 85 to 5 years.
On this 24th anniversary, we commemorate the martyrs of the Vushtrri Massacre. Our past is crucial to our present and future. The blood shed for freedom is never atoned for, just as Serbia's crimes in Kosovo cannot be atoned for.
I call on our justice system to act to illuminate the truth. Punishment for war criminals and justice for victims. War crimes do not have a statute of limitations. The sufferings of our people are always fresh.
May the memory be eternal for all the martyrs and martyrs of freedom!" Kurti said.
