Kosovo Premier Urges Fixing Ties With Serbia Before US Elections
Kosova Prime Minister Albin Kurti stated that an agreement with Serbia is needed before spring, or otherwise before the presidential elections in the USA.
In an interview for "Bloomberg" in Slovenia, Kurti said that there is "a sense of urgency to implement the agreement and to normalize the relations between Kosovo and Serbia, with mutual recognition at the center, at the latest until the spring of the next year".
In addition to the urgency of implementing the normalization agreement, Kurti has said that he is also ready for the organization of new municipal elections in the north, according to the agreement reached with the special emissary of the European Union, Miroslav Lajcak.
Kurti is staying in Slovenia for the Bled Forum. The day before, he clashed with the Prime Minister of Serbia, Ana Bernabic. While Kurti has stated that Serbia is not implementing the agreement on the road to normalization, making normalization difficult, Brnabic has disputed Kosovo's citizenship. In the panel where the prime ministers of Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, North Macedonia and Bosnia-Herzegovina also participated, Kurti said that Serbia has not changed its approach either to Kosovo or to the EU.
In this forum, the positions of the two states were confirmed once again, which will soon return to the negotiating table, after warnings from the EU that in September there will be an intensification of the dialogue. The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, in his address said that there should be reconciliation between the states in the Western Balkans and expressed optimism for the membership of the region in 2030. The elections in the European Union will be held in June, while those in the USA in November 2024.
